Why NYU

NYU

‘Why NYU’ has for years been the CommonApp essay prompt mandatory for all those who wanted to apply to NYU. In just about 250 words, prospective students were meant to convince the NYU admissions team they deserve a spot in this top 30 school. But what does NYU have to offer to motivate 75 thousand applicants to seek admissions every year?

Alongside Columbia University, NYU is a top school in New York City. Located in the Greenwich Village in Lower Manhattan, this university is home to almost 30 thousand undergraduate students and around 30 thousand more postgraduates. New York University (NYU) does not have an integrated campus like many US colleges. Instead the city is NYU’s campus, with buildings spawning around the iconic Washington Square park and all around Greenwich and East Village, alongside the Engineering campus of NYU Tandon in Brooklyn. Within the university, there are 18 schools across 3 campuses. Students can obtain an NYU diploma in New York and its many schools including the world class Tisch School of Arts or the excellent Stern Business School, or in the Abu Dhabi or Shanghai degree granting campuses.

NYU

Majors

Students at NYU have the option to choose between 270 different majors, giving them the ability to widely explore their intellectual interests. Whether you decide to study philosophy, business management or chemistry, you are guaranteed to be taught by world class professors. What is great about academics at NYU is the freedom to explore many areas besides your major interests, in particular through the Core Program. The Core Program in the College of Arts and Sciences, which houses most academic majors, includes: First-Year Seminars, Expository Writing Program, Foreign Language, Foundations of Contemporary Culture and Foundations of Scientific Inquiry. This academic freedom and flexibility is great for those that do not have their heart settled on one particular area of studies, but also for those who understand that the complexities of the world can only truly be understood with interdisciplinary approaches.
