Professional assistance in choosing a school, university, module, or when changing jobs
Children and young people often face dilemmas when choosing the proper school, university, or career path. They may lack information about educational opportunities and the job market to make this decision on their own.
Sometimes, young people rely on the decisions of their parents, older siblings, or friends when making these choices. However, this may prevent them from fully considering their own potential.
Similarly, individuals may struggle to keep their current job or are simply not satisfied with it. It might not be dynamic and challenging enough for them, or conversely, it may be too stressful. Perhaps they are bothered by the work environment. When considering a job change, many individuals are uncertain about their skills and readiness to take on a new role that differs from their previous experience.
What can a professional do for you?
A poor decision could lead to struggles and disappointment along the way, resulting in regrets later on. Such dissatisfaction can be avoided by making a timely, rational decision based on one’s own potential and personal tendencies.
This is why professional guidance in choosing a career path is so important: it helps clients to make informed and rational decisions.
What does a professional use?
A psychologist uses psychological tests and questionnaires to assess the client’s potential. Additionally, a professional takes into account the person’s personality traits, as well as their preferences and goals.
Based on the results of the conducted tests, the psychologist prepares a detailed report for the client. They interpret the results during a counseling session, which takes place a few days after the testing.
With the information obtained, the client can make an informed decision about their future.
When is the right time to seek vocational guidance and counseling?
Professional assistance should be sought from a qualified and experienced psychologist in the following situations:
- Choosing a school or university
- Choosing a major or a module
- Planning to study abroad
- Changing jobs
- Career development
How does the process of Vocational Guidance and Career Counseling work?
The entire process involves an open and responsible collaboration between the psychologist and the client, which lasts for a certain period of time.
Interview
First, an individual interview is conducted with the client at a scheduled time, and with the parent/guardian if the client is a minor.
Through this interview, the psychologist gathers information about the client’s needs and individual situation. Based on the obtained information, the psychologist creates a plan and schedules the testing.
Testing
The testing is done online. The client receives a link to the tests they are expected to complete. The client can choose to complete the test in English, Serbian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, or Croatian.
The questions are related to client’s work needs and interests, so there are no right or wrong answers. The client is only asked to answer all questions honestly. No special preparation is required for testing.
There is no time limit for completing the test, although most participants finish it within 20 minutes. The client can access the testing at any time that is convenient for them.
It is recommended that they choose a time when they are well-rested, healthy, fed, and when they have no planned activities immediately before or after the testing. They should also use glasses or contact lenses if needed for vision.
Individual Counseling Session
After the psychologist scores and interprets the test results, an individual counseling session is scheduled with the client and one of the parents/guardians if the client is a minor. The session lasts up to an hour and involves the interpretation of findings and counseling based on which the client will make an informed decision about their future education or career.
